Every year the lilacs in my yard put on their best show of color and scent to get hot and heavy with other lilacs. They aren’t the only trees in my yard that get it on. There are at least three other flowering trees that show what they’ve got each spring. Next spring will be an orgy of tree love because I have ordered at least 20 new flowering trees to plant in the yard. There will be a hedge of forsythia and a redbud avenue for strolling. I will also underplant the new trees with shade loving wild flowers and will hopefully replace my grass with a carpet of clover.

I took Matt on a pyschogeographic excursion/photograph lesson in the park behind Kmart. The park is located behind an ill planned but prosperous collection of shopping plazas that comprise some of the most beautiful and maligned spaces in the Upper Valley. I often see middle class vehicles with athletic signifiers in the vicinity and I wonder how many of their owners choose to drive long distances to perform the activities related to their signifiers rather than go for a walk behind a strip mall.

We managed to walk from the Kmart parking lot all the way to the abandoned Home Depot nature walk without ever really touching 12a.

Fun was had by all and I enjoyed a mild sunburn.

In typical Gordon fashion, we ran into the owners of the Kmart plaza and I knew a member of their entourage.

When I was in high school, WMUR 9 would run a short program called the New Hampshire minute that would feature something amazing about the granite state. I believe they only produced two spots, one about the Zimmerman House and another about something I don’t remember.

The Zimmerman House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built by one of his apprentices. It is unique in that it is one of the few publicly viewable Wright homes on the east coast and is also down the street from another Wright home.

My challenge was to photograph a building that had been over photographed from a new point of view. I decided to focus not on the structure itself but to the shapes that make up the whole.

What a wonderful pool house.

The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests has done a nice job managing The Rocks Estate, in Bethlehem NH. I used to run an afterschool program in high school called called The Room which was a student run coffee house that promoted local art and music. When we were kicked out of our space in Littleton, The Rocks Estate was kind enough to let us use their space. There is another estate in Bethlehem that was built by relatives of the Glessner family that remains in a semi-abandoned, horribly renovated state.

My Third Grade Teacher’s Father State Office Park

When I was a kid, my mom had a worker’s comp hearing in Concord on the grounds of the old state hospital. I could think of nothing more exciting than getting out and exploring all of the beautiful old crumbling buildings. At that point, most of them were covered in vines and looked pretty scary. Years later, I took a job just because it had regular meetings in one of the repurposed state hospital buildings. The buildings aren’t as decrepit now as they were when I was a child but I’ve had fun exploring them. Not everything is impossible.

The Impossible Project, decided to take on the impossible task of bringing Polaroid integral instant film back from the dead. Like my quest to explore that abandoned New Hampshire hospital, their impossible dream was achieved. Even more exciting than that, is that I have one pack of Impossible PX100 black and white film sitting to my right.

From what I have seen, the PX100 is a difficult film to work with. I imagine it is something like the early polaroid roll films that required coating and were very difficult to use. I haven’t shot my film yet, but from what I’ve seen online, it looks to me very similar to a daguerreotype or an albumin print. I like that. My plan for my PX100 is to use it to document some of the victorian eccentricities in the White Mountains.
